Art Work Considered Controversial

My Mission Statement.

Censorship

Today’s world is unique. In that it is an era grappled in the most serious form of controversial ironies and hypocritical censorship. We live in a world were foreplay and adult intercourse can be witnessed daily, on all three major television networks during the networks “Soap Opera” morning and afternoon hours. Seriously, who still needs to tap into the 6 major porn channels offered by Direct, cable or Dish T.V.? What people don't realize is that anyone can freely watch an episode of sexual activity, between a man & woman, on any daytime soap opera, like Days of Our Lives for instance. In ten years from now, today’s children, will be able to openly see two women going at it, or better yet two men. Does that sound reasonable enough to you? It must, because nobody is doing anything about it. You still let your children what T.V. don't you? Yes, you know you do. Teenagers have more access now to soft porn, then kids ever had. Turn on the Movie Channel after 10 pm on a Friday or Saturday night, and there it is, "Sex Villains," or something stupid like it. When it comes to sex, bare bodies bouncing privates together in motion, still looks like intercourse with or without full-blown, visible penetration. Who do they people think they are kidding? Just the other day, my girlfriend was watching an episode where this man, was position between the woman’s legs. From what I could tell, based off my own personal sexual experiences, that woman on Young and the Restless was grinding the same way most women do in that sexual position. Matter of fact, the man actor should of won an Oscar if he was faking the activity that most comes natural to him. Still, there was little difference. It is not hard to miss naturally impulsive sexual movements. Especially the one where a man has to thrust in and out, pumping his package in and out of his daily co-star’s vagina.

The lovely woman in my life has a son. The other day the three of us went to a local mall to check out some summer deals. Her son is still rather young. Well mommy wanted to stop by Victoria Secrets, and I was more than happy to oblige her. We no more made into the front entryway, before Travis started grabbing his little pecker. I naturally thought he had to go pee. It wasn’t until after he convinced me he wasn’t going to piss himself, that I realized then, the mannequins in the front window, had given my little man his first hard on. Next time, Travis and I will sit outside the pretzel store next door.

I’m a grown man, born and raised in Chicago. I was fortunate to be raised by an Art Broker and a Barber. My family could afford to buy magazines, such as Maxim for me, and Vogue for my sister. How many of you readers have ever picked up one of those two magazines? Have you skimmed through it? Amazing what is now acceptable reading material isn't it? Nevertheless, people will somehow feel the urge to protest Hubs, Blogs, and any other adult businesses promoting the same images, ideas and notions as does a Victoria Secrets, Maxim and Vogue magazine does. For some reason if magazines such as these, feature a few advertising favorites, Peta's no fur ads, they must be wholesome enough to be purchased by doctors offices, hotels, and grocery stores. However, if that doctor’s office had Edouard Manet’s masterpiece, “Luncheon on the grass (Le déjeuner sur l'herbe)” hanging up on their wall, there would be mayhem staged outside the office. In addition, I imagine there would probably be a severe lost of business for all the doctors participating at that facility. What's up with that? Why are hypocrites setting the standards for our society's morality?

In Conclusion:

It appears according to today’s statutes, that it is okay to decorate the storefront of retail store in the mall, so sexually explicated..., a young boy, a child gets obviously turned on. It is also okay to feature scantly clad women, on the front cover page of men and women’s magazines. For some reason though, featuring artistic masterpieces of naked people is wrong. Go figure. I personally find the irony, in these particular situations, rather amazing. What further gets my gall is at any given time, just walk to the self-help section in a Barnes and Noble bookstore, and guess what? They have a world class porno section right there in the mall.

The crazy thing is- that is exactly what my friends and I would do as young boys. We would walk into a Barnes and Nobles or Borders’ bookstore, and check out all the pornographic material for sale. It was great! So what is the big deal if a museum here in America, features an artist’s painting of a nude child, man or woman? I simply do not appreciate the factual hypocrisy there. Nevertheless, people in the late 1940’s up until today screamed foul if a picture was destroyed by the likes of Nazi’s. However, nobody screams foul if the same were to happen today. Under force, many museums all over the world, take down nude painting displays, and tuck the masterpieces silently away. Why is it so hard for people to focus on the richness of the work, instead of the nipples, penises, and pubic hair?

This is something that I have been passionate about for a while. The other day I wrote a hub about the beauty in voluptuous women. A great Hubber friend here made a comment once about an article of mine, which happens to have photographs of certain nude portraits, and commented on whether or not , it was alright to show “nipples” HubPages, and said nothing about the masterpieces. For one, when looking at a painting I personally, do not see individual body parts, I see color, expressionism, and raw emotion. The last thing that could ever happen in a gallery somewhere, would be for someone to get their rocks off while admiring some nude painting. How absurd does that even sound. Never in the history of art, has there been such an orgasmic event. Nine times out of ten, people notice what was featured in the backdrop, setting of the painting, what the paints were used, how meticulous the artist's brush strokes were. Not how big the artist's model tits and ass were. Nevertheless, when I do noticed these things, it is usually after I started glazing upon her soft features, and only then does it become relevant to the painting.

As a lover of art, I admit that I might have a different understanding at the art industry, than do people who have never been to an art gallery, or art history museum. But for me, I cannot imagine a world without the beautiful physique Michelangelo's “David," on display. What if museums were forced to take out or hide all nude sculptures, paintings, or drawings? That would be comparable to someone snuffing out your sense of smell, or something. No body has the right to censor another man's senses, and that is what art is about. Arousing the curiosity deep within us, and enticing our senses to evoke emotions.

With that said, I will not censor my writings on artistic pieces, just because they have now become controversial, and considered pornographic. There is nothing pornographic about the statue of David. If people think that his image should not be seen in a Hubpages article, then I say go back to school. They clearly must be lacking an understanding of world events, and studies. Artwork featuring nude figures, are not necessarily sexually explicated material. If you think so, then I suggest it is your mind that is demented or warped, so grow up and get your head out of the gutter.

Personally, I do not write these hubs in hopes of making huge profits. I write these articles because I love the subject matter, and it is very near my heart. My mother Ophelia has built an empire from dealing and selling nude renderings. I grew up in a household where artistic achievement was celebrated, and so it could be seen hanging through out my childhood homes. It was at this time that I grew to appreciate something other than myself. Even though most of the art my mother sold, were simple pieces depicting an ageless image, it still represented someone's efforts.

"Nude paintings offer the viewer the rarest moment of chance, to peer inside the soul of an artist,” my mother always says. She is right. It is the rarest moment we receive into an artist’s soul. Just look at many of the different hubs I have featured here. Just look at the difference between each of these paintings to the next. They are all uniquely different from artist to artist. The painted images of the woman’s body are so different. The beauty foretold here is what really matters, and how that beauty is display is secondary. It is what inside the folds, not what is on the outside.

Why should you censor works that are acclaimed all over, when as you so rightly say mannequins and mags and tv show rubbish all the time.

I agree with ralwus, Good on you!!

I second ralwus!

This is sublimely wonderful, and I love the way you presented your text here. It screams Rolan. =D This is your masterpiece de resistance`, stand up and be proud that you have shown brazen positivity in the face of stupidity.

I always find it humorous, how America believes it's the land of the free. But show one boob during the Super Bowl, and oh man, we don't care if it was an accident. My fragile child has never looked at their chest before!

I, like you,  was raised around art.  But now living amongst more conservative people, I'm beginning to doubt my own judgement.  Especially after being chastised for taking pictures of my naked toddlers. And pronounced gay for jacuzzing in the nude with girlfriends.  When did the human body become naughty?

I still can't get over the fact that one of the popes had all of the penises chisled off of the statues around rome. I think the people who are offened by these great works of art are pervs, otherwise they would just see the art. The human body. So to rally around your cause- Give me nipples or give me death!

Barebodies to me is art, I believe society makes it shameful. I have seen and read Vogue etc. and it does amaze me how some articles are policed by the same people that read the magazines. Great Hub RK!!! :)

I doubt that there'll ever be a cure for hypocrisy - but it is always great to see it "outed" - I enjoyed your hub and your arguments.

I've spent many a long hour happily painting and sketching the naked human form. There is a great tradition of nudity in art, and here in the UK it is well tolerated and accepted, so I was surprised to hear that it isn't elsewhere. I wrote a hub on the nude in art myself, and it is consistently my best performing hub. This is a good rant RK. Nudity is a fine thing and I have no objection to it either in art or in private, but I do have a problem with the spread of pornography, so I'm with you on that one too.

Art is often in the eye of the beholder. Censorship is usually a way for a minority, or someone in power, to get their preferences forced on everyone else. Public opinoin determines what is art, not what some sensor says it is, and that's as it should be.

Great hub RK. I reckon if it's still (ie painting) it's art. If it's motion picture...maybe not so (depends what is happening)! LOL.

So beautifully said. I have yet to understand how artistic rendering of the human body is considered bad taste. Manet's "Olympia" has always been one of my favorites, but I can only imagine the furor it stirred when first shown! We must always protect the rights of artistic expression in this country. Remember: it can be a very fine line between freedom of expression/speech and pornography. But thank goodness for that Constitution!!

The absolute truth! Self-censorship is the only one that counts. If you are offended by it's looks, look elsewhere.

Self censorship....... yeah, I like that.

Olympia is a fantastic painting. I've studied over it many times. I love Edouard Manet. He was such an illustrated painter. You see his heart in every detail. Thanks for reading this hub/rant.

"It is also ok to feature scantly clad scanks on the front cover page of men and women’s magazines. However, for some reason though, featuring artistic masterpieces of naked people is wrong."

"Why is it so hard for people to focus on the richness of the work, instead of the nipples, penises, and pubic hair? "

You make some good points here, what strikes me is how even though adult (or rather mature) material is more available, people seem to be getting more prudish. Forgetting the fact that nudity is not nessisarily linked to the sexual, and can infact be very much innocent.

I had previously been a member of a mixed artist site which recently went down hill, and I noticed to my dismay that these beautiful elegant nudes were being poked fun at by childish members and I was further disgusted to find what the general users of the site thought popular was a fan made drawing (scribble) of Sonic the Hedgehog. I despair.

People make such a big deal of nudity in US, it's ridiculous, in other countries women do not wear their tops on the beach (Europe for example).

In the US, movies are NOT rated R if there is some forms of violence but Got forbid there might be one nipple and boom..R rating.

There is nothing wrong with nudity, why is so hard for people to understand?

I enjoyed your hub a lot! One of the best I have read so far
