Master of Suffering
15th century artist, Rogier van der Weyden (ca.1400 to1464) artistic creativity is pure poetry, and it is my humble opinion that nobody paints the faces of pain and suffering, better than Rogier. As you yourself can see by viewing these images, Rogier van der Weyden had the rare ability of capturing an intimate moment such as bereavement so perfectly, it absolutely makes it the focal-point of the painting. His talent and ability to freeze frame the emotions of grief and suffering can be found in many of his painted works of art. He truly is the master at transforming basic, raw, human-emotions to canvas. His powerful expressionism, and captivating talent, has (for me at least) set him above most other Dutch painters of his time. I read somewhere once, that since he could portray a person's innermost pose; that a hundred years after his death, King Phillip II of Spain went to great lengths to purchase one of his paintings. Currently in the USA there are over 100 paintings of his on exhibit. If you get the chance to see the exquisite talent of this man, I highly recommend doing so. As you can see by the paintings featured in this introduction article, Rogier van der Weyden was not only a painter, but a true poet and craftsman of astonishing skill and creativity.
